Financial Planning Program Blends Fitness and Finance
Minnesota State’s Financial Planning Program is inviting students, faculty and community members to lace up their sneakers and think about their future — both physically and financially — at the 401k Fun Run/Walk on Friday, Oct. 31.
The event begins with check-in at 8 a.m. at the entrance of Lot 1, where participants can sign in, stretch and meet others before the run/walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. The course will span 4.01 kilometers — about 2.5 miles — winding through campus for a lighthearted start to the day.
According to Maya Nelson, Student Executive Team Chairperson and MCFS Financial Coach, the event’s message goes beyond exercise.
“The goal of the 401k Run/Walk is to raise awareness about the importance of both financial and physical wellness — two pillars of a successful future,” Nelson said. “Just like you can’t get fit overnight, you can’t build financial security without consistent effort and commitment.”
This year’s run is also the kickoff event for the Future Advisors Conference, a larger gathering aimed at helping students explore careers in financial advising and learn about long-term planning. Nelson explained that the conference provides a professional space for students to understand the value of intentional decision-making — not only in personal finance but also in their career paths.
“The run/walk encourages students to take small, intentional steps toward building healthy habits,” Nelson said. “The conference continues that momentum by connecting them with experts who can guide their growth as future financial advisors.”
The playful connection between a “401k” and a 4.01-kilometer course isn’t just a clever pun — it’s a teaching tool. The Financial Planning Program hopes students will leave with a stronger grasp of how early, consistent action — whether saving for retirement or maintaining fitness — pays off over time.
Nelson emphasized that participation isn’t limited to finance majors or avid runners.
“This is more than just a race — it’s an opportunity to take meaningful steps toward both personal and financial wellness,” she said. “For runners, it’s a chance to engage in physical activity in a supportive environment. For supporters, it’s a way to cheer on peers and build community. And for anyone thinking about their financial future, it’s a reminder that small actions today can create a lasting impact.”
The event is free and open to all MSU students and community members. Participants can find the meeting location and registration details through the Microsoft Form linked by the Financial Planning Program.
The 401k Fun Run/Walk reflects MSU’s ongoing commitment to promoting holistic student well-being — showing that building a healthy future means caring for both your body and your bank account.
